About Us

Established in 1843, we are a family run, British company who are today the guardians of the 500 year old traditional slate and stone industry in Cumbria. For nearly 200 years Burlington Stone has worked the high quality, unique and beautiful natural slate and stone minerals to be found in the mountains and fells of the Lake District and south Cumbria. Today this industry is in safe hands as we ensure that the traditional skills and techniques used to work these stones endure, with modern cutting machinery and green technologies added, to deliver a beautiful, long lasting, sustainable, British natural material.

Foreward

Walking near his beloved Holker Hall and recognising that something special lay beneath his feet in the Cumbrian Fells, in 1843 my great-great-great grandfather, William Cavendish, the Second Earl of Burlington (later the 7th Duke of Devonshire) put in place the foundations of what was to become Burlington Stone. In doing so he set the path for his descendants to faithfully follow, to maintain and build on his vision, and it is a privilege to do so today as I lead the company he founded under the same ethos he imagined.

My vision is a blend of the traditions that my family have upheld for more than a century and a half together with a clear plan to create a sustainable business that will serve both future generations and the wider community. This will be delivered through investment in new technology and skills and will lead to the kind of dynamic business that can react and adapt to ever-changing economic conditions. Whether residential or commercial; whether traditional or contemporary, the versatility of Burlington’s range of natural slate and stone products and the inherited values that pervade Burlington Stone’s approach to business make it possible to bring unique style and distinction to any development.

Architects, interior designers, developers, and discerning homeowners throughout the world continue to be inspired by the intrinsic aesthetic and technical properties of Burlington’s natural slate and stone. Therefore, at the heart of all the policies that are developed under my stewardship, will be a single-minded approach to preserving the hard-won standards of exceptional British craftsmanship and commitment to customer service.
